Scott Carter On Writing For Effectiveness

Does good writing matter? I once had a business owner confide in me that his most recent employee was hired based on the strength of her job application. In fact, he said, “I hired her because of a single statement in her resume,” a two-sentence statement he then quoted back to me.

What the business owner didn’t know was that I, not his new employee, had written those words. I had helped create the resume for that applicant, and I had written the sentences that, according to her new boss, got her hired.

It isn’t often that a writer’s feedback is so clear and direct. Good writing matters.
